The On-Board Unit is an electronic technical device that provides unequivocal vehicle identification and determines its position by means of the Electronic Toll Collection System. The On-Board Unit is not portable and from 1 January 2010 the Vehicle Operator shall be liable to use it while driving on specified road sections in the Slovak Republic in a vehicle that is liable to pay the toll.

The System Operator (SkyToll, a. s. ) within the Electronic Toll Collection System operation uses the On-Board Unit's three key integrated technologies:
  • Satellite GPS technology for determining position (ensuring collection of data about the use of specified road sections);
  • GSM/GPRS technology for communication within mobile networks (for data transmission between the On-Board Unit and other IS within the Electronic Toll Collection System);
  • Microwave DSRC technology for short-distance communication (for checking the toll payers within the toll collection control process).
